The Election Commission has requested the President’s Secretary, Saman Ekanayake, to refrain from having a ceremony to renew the ‘Suraksha insurance’ scheme for schoolchildren to be held at the Presidential Secretariat with the participation of Education Minister Susil Premajayantha.

Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake said the conduct of the event at the Secretariat would amount to promoting a candidate and, therefore, could come under criticism from various groups.

The Commission has acknowledged that the Suraksha insurance scheme was an important programme for schoolchildren. Therefore, the Commission has requested to postpone the ‘Suraksha insurance’ renewal programme until the presidential elections are concluded.

However, Education Minister Premajayantha told the Sunday that he was not a candidate and he would organise the event to renew the scheme. The Suraksha insurance scheme was suspended for two years due to a lack of funds and has been renewed with the intervention of the Education Minister.
