One of the great attractions at the Dehiwala Zoo is the feeding of the pelicans.

A large number of pelicans gather at the zoo during feeding time during the middle of the day. The birds gather around the zoo’s kitchen area expecting a meal.

According to Curator at the zoological gardens, Nalaka Sudesh, the birds which were originally migrant birds have started to roost in trees in Colombo and suburban areas near Dehiwela.

He added that the zoo offers the birds 60 kilograms of Tilapia fish daily. Mr Sudesh added that they observe a reduction of the birds in rainy seasons as the birds find opportunity to hunt for fish in marshy lands.
