A student of a private university was killed and two other passengers were seriously injured when a car driven by a 19-year-old youth veered off the road, collided with a van and hit a tree close to the Parliament complex in Battaramulla yesterday.

Police said the driver was speeding and appeared to have lost control of the vehicle.

They said the condition of the two injured passengers in the car was reported to be serious, while the van driver and a passenger in his vehicle suffered minor injuries.

The youth was arrested and subjected to a breathalyser test and medical checkup. The test proved the youth was not under the influence of drugs or liquor. The police said he possessed a driving licence.

Eyewitnesses said the vehicle came at a high speed and veered off the lane and proceeded more than 75 metres before it collided with the van and hit the tree. The car broke into pieces, they said.

Investigations are being carried out by Thalangama police. The youth will be produced in the Nugegoda Magistrate’s court today.
