St. Joseph’s honours achievers in sports
View(s):The Annual Colours Day of St. Joseph’s College, with the title ‘2019 to 2022 — Courage, Quadrennial Sports Awards Ceremony’ was held at the Rev.Fr. (Dr.) Stanley Abeysekara Sports Complex to honour the Josephians who excelled in sports during a period of four years.
A record number of over 500 Josephians including, 228 coloursmen and 48 others who represented Sri Lanka in various sports and 23 who have won the most prestigious and highest award, the ‘Josephian Blue’, and 269 merit winners were honoured on that day.
Sportsmen of the Year awards were presented for each year and Dishane Ranaweera, who brought honour to St. Joseph’s in swimming won the main award for the year 2019. Shenal Sandesh, an acclaimed footballer and Shehan Fernando, who achieved many feats in basketball shared the award for the year 2021. National cricketer and aspiring allrounder Dunith Wellalage won the Sportsman of the Year award for 2022.
A distinguished old Josephian, veteran world class cricketer Chaminda Vaas, graced the occasion as the chief guest.
St. Joseph’s College has achieved many feats and titles in swimming, cricket, basketball, football and badminton and also has done exceptionally well in athletics, rugby, hockey, tennis and other key sports.
