The ‘Tie’ was an oversight
According to the new ODI playing conditions, Clause 16.3.1.1 requires a Super Over to be bowled if the scores are level after both innings. If the Super Over also ends in a tie, additional Super Overs must be played until a winner is determined, unless exceptional circumstances prevent this.
The relevant clause states: “If the teams’ scores are equal after both innings have been completed (if applicable under DLS – see clause 16.4), then a Super Over shall be played. If the Super Over is a tie, then unless exceptional circumstances arise (see paragraph 25 of Appendix G) subsequent Super Overs shall be played until there is a winner. Should it not be possible to play or to complete the Super Overs needed to determine a winner, the match shall be tied.”
The match officials for Friday’s game were Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle, On-Field Umpires Joel Wilson and Raveendra Wimalasiri, Reserve Umpire Ruchira Pallyaguruge, and TV Umpire Paul Reiffel.
Sri Lanka Cricket announced that the ICC has addressed the issue and the correct rule will be applied in the remaining matches.
“It was definitely an oversight, and the ICC has addressed the issue as they deploy the match officials for these games,” sources said on the condition of anonymity.
The second ODI of the series will be played today at the same venue.
