Planters to meet unions at Wages Board

The minimum wages case in the Appeal Court filed by the Planters Association has been dismissed following the revoking of the gazette requiring estate workers to be paid a minimum of Rs.1700.

As a result the Labour Minister Manusha Nanayakkara has called for a meeting of the Wages Board tomorrow. In this respect, the Planters Association (PA) and the labour unions like the Ceylon Workers Congress and other constituent parties will be present at the meeting.

This meeting (it’s still unclear whether Mr. Nanayakkara would attend as he was unseated by the Supreme Court on Friday), has been called to ensure that estate workers will be provided an increase in their wages following a discussion with the parties concerned.

It is expected that both parties will reach an agreement on the increase in wages however the PA points out that it is questionable why only the estate workers have been granted a 70 per cent wage hike with theirs being the only wages on the wages board paying the highest minimum wage.

Sri Lanka’s plantation companies have proposed a 33 per cent increase in take home wages based on a productivity model or a 22 per cent increase in wages on the attendance based model.

RPCs have agreed to grant an additional increase in allowance of Rs.200 per day or Rs.5000 per month or equal to 22 per cent increase in take home wage on an attendance based wage model.

But as part of the industry’s aim of promoting productivity on the estates the RPCs have proposed to pay Rs.65 per kilo of green leaf that would mean Rs.1300 for 20 kg (Rs.7500 per month) or equal to 33 per cent increase in take home pay.

However, the case filed in the Supreme Court by the PA against the decision of the Appeal Court is still being heard with the next hearing set for February 2025.
