Chinese smart classroom project to start this month
View(s):The smart classroom project for government schools with Chinese assistance will be launched by the end of this month.
Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that the Chinese Government has signed the agreement to provide the required equipment, valued at USD 20 million, over a three-year period.
He said the Ministry would be sending the project proposal to the Chinese Embassy by next week giving them details of the schools which require the facility.
In the first stage, the Government expects to receive equipment for 1,500 schools during this year.
Some 3,000 more schools will be linked through a data centre which will be set up at the Ministry.
150 trainers are being trained, while another 4,000 more teachers are also being trained to make use of the facilities.
In addition, 1,000 smart boards will be received through the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).
Under Stage II, another 1,500 schools will benefit from the Chinese project by next year.
Minister Premajayantha said the facility could be made use effectively to make use of the available teaching facilities. It can also be helpful at times of teacher strikes.
Teachers available in national schools in Colombo could be used, through the project, to share their teaching skills in some 3,000 schools in the provinces.
He said the teaching material, hitherto available for main schools in the city, will now be shared to the provinces effectively. -DWJ
