The Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS), University of Sri Jayewardenepura has announced that several of its academics have been honored with the President’s Award for their inventions.

The Presidential Awards for Inventions 2024 was organised by the Sri Lanka Inventors Commission in coordination with the Presidential Secretariat.

Prof Indira Wickramasinghe, Prof Chamari Dissanayaka and Prof SB Nawarathne have received a merit award in the Technical Field of Food Technology for their invention “A Process for Developing Sea Cucumber Incorporated Ready to Drink Soup Mix” which was patented in 2019.

The University said this accomplishment has been recognised for its innovative creation of a nutritious sea cucumber soup. Their research has focused on harnessing the health benefits of sea cucumbers, which are rich in protein, vitamins and minerals.

The team’s efforts have not only resulted in a delicious and healthy food product but also in promoting sustainable aquaculture practices. The invention highlights their expertise in food science and their dedication to enhancing dietary options that are both nutritious and environmentally friendly, the University said.

Prof M A J Wansapala’s invention of food-grade agar represents a significant advancement in the food industry. His group received a merit award in the Technical Field of Food Technology for his invention patented in 2018.

Agar, a gelatinous substance derived from seaweed, is widely used as a gelling agent in food production, microbiology and other scientific applications. Prof Wansapala has developed a high-quality, safe and versatile form of agar that can be used in a variety of culinary and scientific settings. This achievement demonstrates his commitment to improving food safety and quality through innovative research, the University added.

Dr Saranga Diyabalanage has been awarded for his development of a water filter that utilises gem minerals to trap heavy metal ions.

His group were placed second in the Technical Field of Chemistry for his invention. This filter is capable of removing harmful contaminants such as lead, mercury and arsenic from water, making it safer from consumption and use. Dr Diyabalanage’s invention holds potential for improving water quality and public heath, especially in regions where water contamination is a concern. His work exemplifies the application of science research to address real-world environmental and health issue, the University added.
