Ministry plans more Zonal education offices

The number of Zonal education offices in Sri Lanka is to be expanded from 100 to  120  by January next year,  Education Minister Susil Premajayantha told Parlament.

He said that in view of the increase of the student population and number of schools there is a requirement to increase the Education zones.

He said that Colombo currently has 144 schools of which 21 are national schools, 20 are government assisted schools  and others are schools under the provincial councils.  He said that there is a student population of 190,000 with 12,000 teachers.

Minister Premajayantha said that in Colombo three more zones for Borella, Colombo West and Colombo east will established. He said the mapping of the zones have been completed and cabinet approval has been received.

In addition zonal education offices have been informed of the plan.

Under the proposal  the 120 zones will have  350 school boards. Each school board will have 1250 schools.
