‘Emoji’ on canvas
View(s):‘Emoji, an exhibition of modern arts created by Harshana Kumarasiri and Teran Indika, will be held at the Harold Peiris Arts Gallery in Colombo 7 on August 16, 17 and 18 starting at 10.00am on each day.
In the Sri Lankan Art context, modernity has largely been identified as a phenomena similar to Capitalism. Artists were seen reluctant to explore the subjective dimensions of contemporary life, focusing instead on themes of capitalist progress and development.
As per our view, Modern Art means expressing human subjectivity (antagonism) rather than representing external reality, nature or culture etc. This does not mean that we are prioritising inside (inner essence) over outside. Instead of that, our endeavour is to express human subjectivity that blurs the line between this inside and outside’ explained veteran artist Harshana Kumarasiri.
‘So our upcoming art exhibition seeks to break away with this former tradition (representing external reality, capitalist progress, culture, nature and so on…) and tries to engage with a new art form that can express our antagonistic subjectivity. This will not only challenge the artistic narrative in Sri Lanka and also challenges the viewer to engage with Art on a more subjective level’ he added.
