SLPP Gampaha District MP Sudarshini Fernandopulle has initiated a Private Members Bill to amend the Maternity Benefits Ordinance to grant seven days leave for women who suffer a miscarriage as well as those who have to terminate a pregnancy on medical grounds.

The seven days leave will be granted from the date of miscarriage, if the miscarriage occurs in the first 28-weeks of pregnancy and 7 days from the date of termination of pregnancy under medical grounds, under the provisions of the proposed bill.

The Maternity Benefits (Amendment) Act has been published in the Gazette and will be presented to Parliament shortly.

Dr Fernandopulle chairs the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus.
