Drones, snipers and 4,500 police personnel for nominations on Thursday

Drone cameras, snipers and more than 4,500 police personnel will be deployed for security operations in and around the Election Commission on presidential election nomination day on Thursday.
Detailed security plans were discussed on Friday at a meeting presided over by Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake. The meeting was attended by Public Security Ministry Secretary Viyani Gunatillake, Defence Chief of Staff, General Shavendra Silva, Senior DIG (Administration) Lalith Pathinayake and Special Task Force Commandant DIG Waruna Jayasundara.
Mr. Ratnayake told the Sunday Times security plans would be focused on candidates, those accompanying them, and party supporters. The STF would be in charge of security within the building and the immediate vicinity.
Nominations will be received between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. with a 30-minute objection time until 11.30 a.m. So far, 27 candidates have placed their deposits, but the number is expected to rise as deposits will be received until Wednesday. Mr. Ratnayake said the candidate could only be accompanied into the nomination hall by two persons, including a lawyer.
