Prominent monks express support to President’s candidature
View(s):Prominent Buddhist monks have extended their support to President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming election.
The Sanwardena Maha Lekadikari of Ramagnya Maha Nikaya, the Ven. Karakole Piyadassi Nayaka Thera, said President Wickremesinghe took over the premiership and led the country out of a bad situation in 2022.
The Nayake Thera said that some people were making statements that they too could have done this after the President guided the country to come out of the rock bottom situation.

The Nayake Thera made these remarks while addressing the new Bikku Ekamuthu Kathikawa at Papiliyana on Friday.
He said most presidential candidates were uttering lies to attack the president. “People always hurl stones at the trees that bear fruits. This alone shows that President Wickremesinghe is the most suited leader to take up the responsibility of the country.”
The Chief Incumbent of the Sedawatta Purana Rajamaha Viharaya, the Ven. Ambanwala Gnanaloka Thera, said the monks had gathered at the event to extend their support to the current president.
“At a time when the people of the country had no faith in tomorrow, Mr. Wickremesinghe, as a single member of his party in parliament, took up the responsibility to salvage the country and its economy. Within two years, the President has brought the country forward in all aspects of development,” he said.
Ven. Gnanaloka Thera said the electricity bill had been reduced by 30% and the price of most essential items had been reduced. He emphasised the need for an experienced and internationally respected leader to take the country forward, and deal with its many problems.
The chairman of the Eheliyagoda Sansanarakshaka Balamandala and head of Vilegoda Purana Vihara, Ven. Marapana Hemananda Thera, said this was an event where all venerable Maha Sangha had come together to make a joint announcement. “I think it is difficult to say that any leader in the history of Sri Lanka has taken up such a challenge,” he said.
“This is a movement where all the monks and all the people of the country are rallying around the president. The reason for that is that today the people have understood that the country needs a leader with experience,” he said.
Ven Padangala Samitha Thera said that this election was a crucial election compared to previous elections. “In the past, we had elected leaders to end the war. We are now not looking for such leaders,” he added.
The chief incumbent of the Papoliyana Sumithradevi Purana Raja Maha Viharaya, Wellampitiye Sumanadamma Thera, said the Trinikaika Maha Sangharatna always came forward and stood for the betterment of the country.
“In those days, kings obtained monks’ blessings before going to war. Today, as the Maha Sangharatna, we have come to support President Wickremesinghe. We stood with President Mahinda Rajapaksa to develop the country and end the war. Now we stand with Mr. Wickremesinghe and give him the strength to recover the country’s economy that became bankrupt.
