Pedestrians’ right of way is being hindered by allowing seating along the Queen’s Hotel corridor to view the perahera.

In 2019, when permission was sought from the Kandy Municipal Council by members, the Mayor at the time Kesara Senanayake turned down the request to allow Queen’s Hotel corridor to be given for seating accommodation.

In 1963, this corridor and its upper portion had been handed over to the Council as a thoroughfare for the use of the public.

The late Mayor D E Pathirane opened a plaque indicating that the corridor belongs to the Council. But, the plaque was vandalised and the corridor remained a thoroughfare for the public.

Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela said that seats are being sold to view the perahera at exorbitant rates.

Some people are fleecing visitors to the country who might think that the seats are sold for the perahera by Maligawa authorities.

The annual perahera is conducted with Maligawa and devale funds.

Services to the community are arranged by the District Secretary on behalf of the State.

The Kandy Municipality, it is learnt, has received a tender for ninety one lakh rupees for the seating accommodation of the Queen’s Hotel corridor.

The Organisation for the Protection of Public Property are to seek a judicial remedy for this thoroughfare, its President Anura Gonawela   said.
