View(s):Remembering a true statesman
The 19th death anniversary of former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar falls on August 12.
Kadirgamar was a much-loved man, brilliant strategist, and true nationalist. Whoever claims to have won the war, it was he who caused the beginning of the end for LTTE leader Prabhakaran by touring world capitals and exposing the true colours of the LTTE and politically isolating them.
Kadirgamar’s speech (cake and icing) at the unveiling of his portrait in the hallowed halls of the Oxford Union revealed his greatness. In contrast our political minions confined his statue to the packing cases for seven long years. What a way to honour a man who could have saved our nation.

Poet’s guide from the Bus Window 101
Heavy bags full of sighs
Standing in line and line,
Dread of your smiling eyes
Reflects the weighing life.
You saw the empty seat
Was it like a reward,
For the burdens you bore alone?
So you took a seat
With all your thoughts.
Wrinkled faces,
Unsteady walks,
Shaky hands holding,
Briefcases full of hope.
Not a smile on that face I saw,
Beads of sweaty gold
Soaking shirts that scream,
“A hard day’s work paid off.”
