Cabinet approves setting up of Regional Centre for Maritime Studies in Sri Lanka
View(s):The establishment of the Regional Centre for Maritime Studies in Sri Lanka has been given Cabinet approval.
The proposal was presented by the president in his capacity as Minister of Defence to enter into a bilateral agreement between the governments of Sri Lanka and France to establish a ‘Regional Centre for Maritime Studies’.
It has been suggested to establish the centre at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and to obtain the necessary assistance and infrastructure from the Trincomalee Naval and Maritime Academy.
Sri Lanka has been identified by the French Government as the most suitable location for the establishment of the Regional Centre for Maritime Studies in the region. Sri Lanka is a member of the Indian Ocean Rim Association and its current chair.
