Education digitalisation goes beyond replacing blackboards with smart boards: Minister
View(s):Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha has emphasised that digitalisation in education goes beyond simply replacing blackboards with smart boards; it encompasses a broader purpose and vision.
He was speaking at a Ministry event on raising digitalisation awareness.
Sri Lanka received a USD 20 million grant from China to digitalise the general education system, the Minister said. As part of this initiative, starting in January 2025, the Chinese government will provide 1,000 smart boards, benefiting 500 schools across the country.
In addition, the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) will fund the purchase of another 1,000 smart boards. The necessary infrastructure is currently being developed, and the Minister stressed the importance of using foreign grants efficiently and without delay.
Minister Premajayantha also highlighted that even a densely populated country like China has already digitised 95% of its education sector, urging Sri Lanka to accelerate its efforts to meet international education standards.
Despite the economic challenges faced since 2022, the Minister noted that educational development initiatives have continued. He also mentioned that ongoing teacher training and human resource development are crucial to maintaining high-quality education. (NA)
