Plans to restructure State unis, consolidate vocational training centres
View(s):President Ranil Wickremesinghe has outlined a comprehensive plan to reform Sri Lanka’s higher education system as a key driver for economic recovery.
Addressing the University Lecturers’ Conference held on Tuesday he stressed the importance of higher education in the nation’s development, and called for greater autonomy for State universities to enhance the quality of education.
President Wickremesinghe announced plans to restructure State universities, consolidate vocational training centres into colleges, and introduce job-oriented associate degrees.
He also mentioned proposals to establish four new technology-focused universities and collaborations with international institutions. Additionally, there are discussions to grant university status to non-government degree-awarding institutes.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha highlighted the goal of creating a cohesive education system that unites all 17 State universities, 5 higher education institutions, and the non-state sector to drive Sri Lanka’s educational and economic future. (NA)
