A proposed school inspector system is to be introduced across all schools throughout the country with effect from January 1, next year.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that the system is being introduced as an administrative reform following approval from the Cabinet.

He said that the 10,120 schools across the country will be divided into 120 educational zones which will be monitored by 421 persons who have been recruited as school inspectors.

Their main task would be to play a school supervision role and they will be expected to send in a team at least every month to monitor the schools. They will cover Grades 1 to 13.

Among the matters under supervision will be the number of teachers, students, available facilities and report back to the Education Ministry about necessary action to be taken.

Checking if the teachers have completed their syllabuses, completing practical programmes and teacher performance will be monitored by the inspectors.

Also checking if tests have been conducted will be monitored.

“They will be entrusted to make adjustments in improving the quality of school education,” he said.

Education Administrative Service officials as well as Education Instructors will be included in the team.

Fulfilling various requirements in schools including measures in filling up the vacancies will be part of the task, he said.
