SLIIT has announced two significant additions to its roster of international partner universities, expanding its SLIIT Global Pathways programme. The University of Edinburgh, a prestigious institution in Scotland, and the University of Western Australia, a top-ranked university in Perth, join the existing partnership with the University of Queensland to form SLIIT Global Pathways. The initiative offers Sri Lankan students unprecedented access to world-class education from three globally renowned institutions.

The SLIIT Global Pathways programme stands out for its collaboration with universities consistently ranked among the world’s best. According to the QS World University Rankings 2024, the University of Edinburgh ranks 22nd globally, the University of Queensland stands at 43rd, and the University of Western Australia is placed 90th. This partnership with top-tier institutions reinforces SLIIT’s commitment to providing Sri Lankan students with access to internationally recognised, high-quality education.

A key feature of SLIIT Global Pathways is the opportunity for Sri Lankan students to begin their world-class education at home at a reduced cost, with guaranteed entry into the University of Western Australia, University of Edinburgh, or University of Queensland for their final year(s) of study. The arrangement ensures international education is more accessible while providing a smooth transition to studying abroad.

Additionally, through SLIIT Global Pathways, students benefit from scholarship opportunities, including a 25% scholarship for those continuing to the University of Queensland. This vital financial support guarantees pursuing an international degree even more attainable for Sri Lankan students.

The expansion marks a vital breakthrough for Sri Lankan students, as it opens up new avenues for world-class education, broadening their horizons in an increasingly interconnected global world. The partnerships enhance SLIIT’s international standing and provides Sri Lankan students with unprecedented access to cutting-edge programmes, research opportunities, and global perspectives.

Through SLIIT the University of Edinburgh offers two undergraduate engineering programmes: the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering and the BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering programme prepares students to become future-ready civil engineers capable of shaping and sustaining the changing world. The comprehensive programme enables specialisation in structural engineering, environmental engineering, construction management, geotechnical engineering, and fire safety engineering, with a strong emphasis on both individual and group engineering design projects. The programme is also structured to meet the evolving needs of the engineering sector, preparing students for careers in construction companies, specialist subcontractors, and government authorities.

The BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme provides a comprehensive study of both electrical and electronics engineering. The curriculum covers diverse themes including electrical power, digital and analogue electronics, microelectronics, electromagnetics and photonics, bioelectronics, and sensor networks and data analysis. The programme balances theoretical studies with practical experimentation, preparing students to tackle modern engineering challenges both independently and collaboratively.

The University of Western Australia provides two computing programmes: the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Computer Science and the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Computer Science and Cyber Security.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computer Science, is a comprehensive programme to equip students with cutting-edge skills in computing technologies. The curriculum covers a broad range of specialisations including enterprise-level programmeming, systems, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and software engineering. Students gain a deep understanding of theoretical, algorithmic, implementation, and systems principles underlying computer languages and networks, preparing them to develop new technologies and master advanced programmeming techniques.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computer Science and Cyber Security equips students with essential skills to design, implement, and manage secure computer systems. The programme emphasises the protection of data and systems from cyber-attacks by teaching students to assess risks, reduce the impact of security breaches, and make informed decisions about the cost and benefits of secure system implementation. Graduates are well-prepared for a wide range of careers, including roles as cybersecurity specialists, software developers, system architects, and IT application specialists, enabling them to contribute to the development of secure digital environments.

The University of Western Australia also offers a Bachelor of Commerce programme, which aims to develop students’ analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills with a global business perspective. This programme prepares students for careers in business, government, or the not-for-profit sector.

All programmes listed offer diverse career opportunities across various sectors, including construction, engineering consulting, government, telecommunications, software development, data science, cyber security, and business management. Entry requirements for the programmes include relevant stream passes at the GCE Advanced Level (Local), or equivalent qualifications for Cambridge or Edexcel students, along with passing SLIIT’s aptitude test.
