Sri Lankan universities to sign agreements with foreign universities

The Cabinet approved entering into a memorandum of understanding/cooperation agreements between Sri Lankan universities and foreign universities for educational cooperation.

The objective is to raise rankings of Sri Lankan universities in keeping with world ranking indices and developing higher education cooperation.

The agreements have been prepared according to the observations and recommendations of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Department of National Planning and Department of External Resources.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the Education Minister to sign an MoU between the University of Peradeniya and the University of Illinois, USA for mutual participation in the field of education and research.

The other agreements are;

  • Cooperation Agreement between University of Jaffna and Oxford University, UK with the objective of capacity building, training programmes and conducting research.
  • MoU between University of Peradeniya and University of Johns Hopkins, USA with the aim of conducting joint research in the field of nursing, educational student transfers between the two countries and/or development of educational programmes relevant to the field.
  • MoU between University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Hunan Chinese Medical Faculty of Peoples Republic of China for exchange of student-academic staff to strengthen cooperation in education.
  • MoU between University of Moratuwa and University of Maryland, USA to enter into joint agreements to exchange scientific knowledge and cultural tradition.
  • MoU between University of Sri Jayewardenepura and University of Meiji, Japan to exchange academic staff for the progress of education and research.
  • MoU between University of Peradeniya and Association of Commonwealth Universities, UK for higher education scholarship programme implemented under the Maritime States Cooperation Programme.
  • MoU between University of Kelaniya and Nalanda University in India to develop academic cooperation and strengthen historical, cultural and intellectual relationships.
  • MoU between Buddhist Pali University and Vietnam Buddhist Academy to develop cooperation in the field of academic research. -RC
