The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) yesterday began an elephant survey with the support of officials of state departments, university students and lecturers, officers of the tri forces and the civil defence force.
The department’s Director General Chandana Sooriyabandara, said that 95 percent of field staff of the department will participate, in addition to officials from the Forest Department and the Department of National Zoological Gardens.
He said the survey is not meant to count each and every animal but to collect data about these animals, including the number of calves, new births, and overall health condition of the animals.
“We would gather data ratios such as sex and age as well as other details to compare with previous data to update our knowledge of the elephants,” he said.
He said since the results of the survey need to be analysed, it would take about a month to finalise.
Mr. Sooriyabandara said the survey that began at 1.00 pm yesterday would continue for 48 hours.
“Our officials and other stakeholders who are engaged in the survey would be deployed near identified water sources in wildlife parks islandwide frequented by elephants. He said the survey aims to collect data on the elephant population dynamics and the health condition of the animals.
