Around 27, 000 people belonging to 8,522 families have been impacted by the heavy rainfall received in the past 48 hours. The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said people in areas of Ratnapura, Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Ampara, Galle, and Badulla were facing hardships, while one person is reported missing from the Ampara district.

The Duty Meteorologist of the Meteorological Department warned that the prevailing showery conditions are expected to continue until today in the south-western part of the island due to low-level atmospheric disturbances in the vicinity of Sri Lanka.

She said some places in Ratnapura and Kegalle districts have received rainfalls exceeding 100 mm. Eheliyagoda recorded the heaviest rainfall in the past 24 hours, measuring a staggering 233 mm.

“Very heavy showers above 150 mm were received in some areas in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts,” she added.

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued landslide early warnings for five districts. People residing in several divisional secretariats in Galle, Kalutara, Matara, Ratnapura, and Kegalle districts have been asked to be vigilant.

The heavy showers caused significant flooding across several areas. In Colombo some areas were flooded on Friday evening and last morning. Heavy traffic congestions were also reported due to roads getting inundated.

Kalutara Disaster Management Centre Assistant Director Prasantha Perera said many roads in Walallawita, Palinda Nuwara, and Bulathsinhala were inundated. Dambala and Naliadda areas along the Bulathsinhala-Molkawa road were also inundated. Mathugama, Baduraliya, and Walallawita were other roads that were flooded. Two sluice gates of the Kukule Ganga reservoir were opened, with a water capacity of 100 m3/s cubic meters per second being released.

The Irrigation Department warned of a possible flood situation in low-lying areas close to Kuda Ganga, Gin Ganga, Nilwala, and Maguru Ganga valleys in the Bulathsinhala Madurawala and Palinda Nuwara areas.

Due to considerable rainfall occurring in the upstream catchment areas of the Kuda Ganga subbasin of the Kalu Ganga, warnings were issued of the threat of roads getting flooded.

Divisional secretariat divisions in Seethawaka in Colombo, Elpitiya, Yakkalamulla, Neluwa, and Nagoda in Galle, Agalawatta, Palindanuwara, Dodangoda, Walallawita, Bulathsinhala, Ingiriya,

Mathugama, Horana in Kalutara, Kegalle, Yatiyanthota, Deraniyagala, Bulathkohupitiya, Dehiowita, Warakapola in Kegalle district, Athuraliya and Pitabeddara in Matara district, Pelmadulla, Ayagama, Kuruwita, Nivithigala, Elapatha, Eheliyagoda, and Kalawana in Ratnapura districts were alerted to possible flooding.
