SLMC suspends Ali Zahir Moulana for supporting Ranil
View(s):The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has suspended its Batticaloa District Parliamentarian Ali Zahir Moulana with immediate effect for breaching party discipline by extending his support to President Ranil Wickremesinghe for the presidential election.
In a letter, SLMC Secretary M. Nizam Kariapper told Mr. Moulana that the party’s high command at its August 4 meeting decided to support SJB leader Sajith Premadasa. and even though Mr. Moulana had not been physically present at the meeting, he had pledged to abide by whatever decision the party took.
“I have been instructed by the leader of the SLMC, Rauff Hakeem, to inform you that your decision to support the candidature of Ranil Wickremesinghe for the 2024 presidential election is a complete violation of the party’s decision, as well as the pledge you made in you affidavit when you were declared elected as one of the deputy leaders of the party at the party delegates conference held on 22 June, 2022,” Mr. Kariapper said in the letter.
Mr. Moulana has been given a week to reply to the letter sent by the party secretary and explain his action.
