Dushy and Ramya in first full recital for cello and piano

Dushyanthi Perera (cello) and Ramya De Livera Perera (piano) – both recognised as leading exponents of their respective instruments have a long history of friendship and musical collaboration but their concert on August 22 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre, marks the first full recital for cello and piano they have presented.

Dushy has been performing for many years –  as a soloist, chamber musician and most recently, as conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka (SOSL). She is the founder and director of the Cantando Cello Ensemble, and regularly directs concerts in the Earle De Fonseka chamber music concert series. As two thirds of the Colombo Trio, Dushy and Ramya have performed a wide repertoire of chamber music along with Ananda Dabare (violin).

One the country’s most accomplished pianists, Ramya a frequent soloist with the SOSL, is the collaborator of choice when visiting artists perform, and a teacher par excellence— another feature both artists have in common.

On August 22, they will perform a captivating program, chosen to showcase the range and depth of the cello, and to highlight some of the amazing repertoire of music written for cello and piano. The recital begins with J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue from solo cello suite no. 5, which will be followed by Rachmaninov’s Sonata for cello and piano – a virtuosic piece for both instruments, and the core of this recital. The second half of the program features music by Faure, Hindemith, Cassado and David Popper’s showstopper of a Hungarian Rhapsody.

This recital is a tribute to the late Dr. Earle De Fonseka, whose mentoring and support is gratefully remembered by the older generation of musicians in this country. Dushy acknowledges the impact his guidance had on her growth and development as a performer and conductor.

This event is sponsored by the Earle De Fonseka Trust, and the proceeds will be donated in their entirety to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Tickets and box plan are available at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.
