Hesali Peiris becomes the youngest Sri Lankan at FIM Asia Women’s Cup

Hesali Peiris is making waves locally as the youngest participant in the women’s motorcycle racing championship. Representing Sri Lanka on the global stage, Hesali, 14, is not just breaking barriers but also setting new benchmarks for aspiring female riders across the country.

She will break barriers on August 30 as the youngest female rider from Sri Lanka to compete in an all-female R2M SportProduction 200 SS/ 200 SS Junior event, which will be part of the FIM Asia Women’s Cup of Circuit Racing – Thailand 2024. The event will take place at the Thailand Circuit in Nakhonchaisri from August 30 to September 1.

Hesali, 14, will be in action on August 30 at the qualifiers of her category during the morning session, where the grids will be determined. She will compete in the Race 1 of the 20km run that consists of eight laps on August 31 shortly after noon, followed by the Race 2 on September 1 during the afternoon session.

At a time when the motorsport world is predominantly male, Hesali’s presence is a powerful reminder that talent and determination know no gender boundaries. Her participation in this highly competitive arena is a significant achievement, showcasing the strength and potential of young women in sports traditionally dominated by men.

The championship, part of the prestigious FIM Asia Cup Road Racing series, will take place across three rounds in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand; Taiwan; and the Philippines. It is one of the oldest motorcycle racing series globally, bringing together top talent from countries like Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Iran, India, Nepal, Taiwan, China, and Sri Lanka.

For Hesali, the journey is not just about personal glory.

Among the categories besides Hesali’s event includes Yamaha Moto Challenge, Harley Davidson Sportster S Rookie Cup, R2M Superbike SB 1000/Master Cup 1000/R2M Racers Café Cup 1300, 750, R2M SuperSport 400 SS/400 SP/400 SP Junior SP and R2M American V-Twin Cup SuperBagger Pro Cup/Evolution M8/Revolution Max Rookie.

While winners are celebrated with trophies, the points they earn contribute significantly to their country’s standing in future international competitions. Hesali’s role in representing Sri Lanka is not just a personal achievement but also a matter of national pride, highlighting the importance of her participation in the international sports arena. The President of the Federation of Motorcycle Sports in Sri Lanka (FMSSL) stated that his entity particularly, is thrilled about Hesali’s participation.

“As someone who made the country proud with our own children’s accomplishments in motorsport back in the day, I recognise the significance of her achievements. I believe that Hesali’s talent and dedication will serve as an inspiration for future generations. I admire the effort of all FMSSL members, who have managed to motivate the advance of the sport further in Sri Lanka,” said Shane Gunawardena, the President of FMSSL.

As Hesali gears up for the upcoming races, she surely inspires countless young women who look up to her as a role model, proving that with passion and perseverance, no dream is too big to achieve.
