Sri Lanka and the Maldives discuss educational collaboration
View(s):Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the Maldives Ranga Goonawardena met with Maldives’ Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu to discuss strengthening educational collaboration between the two nations.
The meeting highlighted the importance of shared history and cultural ties, particularly focusing on the role Lankan teachers have played in shaping the Maldivian education system.
Minister Shafeeu expressed concern about the recent decline in Lankan teachers in Maldivian schools, noting the significant impact they have had on the country’s development.
He emphasised the need to address this issue to maintain the high-quality education Lankan educators are known for. High Commissioner Goonawardena reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to supporting Maldivian education and encouraged the Maldivian Education Ministry to increase the recruitment of Lankan teachers.
The discussions also touched on broader educational cooperation, including the potential for student exchange programmes to foster mutual understanding and strengthen ties between the younger generations of both countries. (NA)
