Election Media Monitoring and Voter Awareness Centre launched
View(s):A new initiative aimed at bolstering media professionalism, upholding democratic values and media ethics in election coverage was marked with the launch of the Election Media Monitoring and Voter Awareness (EMMVA) Centre this week.
The organisation is led by a team of media specialists and academics, and will monitor media practices during the ongoing presidential election campaign in Sri Lanka.
Convener of EMMVA Prof Tudor Weerasinghe, along with other senior academics and media professionals, will meet with Election Commission officials this week. The discussion will focus on media monitoring strategies and how best to ensure adherence to established media guidelines throughout the presidential election.
The primary objective according to EMMVA is to foster a disciplined political culture by ensuring that media practices adhere to ethical and professional standards.
Key functionalities of the centre include: Impartial mediation where the EMMVA will serve as an unbiased mediator, overseeing media behaviour in election publicity while maintaining neutrality and transparency, Comprehensive monitoring and research where the centre will monitor media behaviour from the start to the end of the election process.
This includes tracking
traditional and new media platforms such as television, radio, newspapers,
posters, billboards, movies, television series, and social media channels like Facebook and Instagram.
