A European Union election observation team will begin its monitoring duties in the coming days, holding meetings with stakeholders.;The European Union’s Press and Public Outreach officer, Marek Mracka, told the Sunday Times that the deputy chief observer was already in the country and the chief observer was expected to arrive next week. The mission will hold its first of its several meetings with voters, public representatives, and civil society activists on Thursday and hold a media conference on Friday.

On August 26, the EU’s long-term observers will join the mission to be deployed across the country to monitor the election campaign.

An additional 32 short-term observers would reinforce the mission during election week, with deployments throughout the country, the EU official said.

The EU team will remain in Sri Lanka until the entire electoral process is complete.

In a post on its website, the EU says its election monitoring mission in Sri Lanka follows an invitation from the Election Commission of Sri Lanka. Accordingly, the EU will deploy an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to monitor the September 21 presidential poll in
Sri Lanka.

The EU’s Foreign Policy Chief and European Commission Vice President, Josep Borrell, has appointed European Parliament member Nacho Sánchez Amor as chief observer of the mission.

Mr. Borrell says, “The deployment of the EOM to Sri Lanka this year reflects the EU’s long-standing commitment to supporting credible, transparent,
inclusive, and peaceful elections in the country.”
