Rukman Senanayake, former UNP chairman, passes away
View(s):Rukman Senanayake, a senior politician and onetime chairman of the United National Party (UNP) passed away yesterday. He was 76.
Rukman, who hailed from Sri Lanka’s first family of politics, was the son of Robert Senanayake and grandson of the country’s first Prime Minister D. S. Senanayake.
Mr. Senanayake first entered Parliament in 1973 after winning the by-election from the Dedigama electorate following the death of his uncle, Dudley Senanayake. He remained a Member of Parliament until 1977, but did not contest in the 1977 General Election.
He returned to Parliament later and served several other stints as an MP from 1994 onward and served as the Cabinet Minister of Environment and Natural Resources under the UNP government from 2001 to 2004.
He also served briefly as UNP Chairman and its Vice Leader.
Mr Senanayake retired from active politics several years ago and remained away from public life until until his demise.
