The Meteorology Department Director General Athula Karunanayake has said that the heavy rains being experienced in some parts of the country are expected to reduce during the weekend.

However, several spells of showers are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, and North-Western provinces. Showers or thundershowers may occur in other areas of the island during the evening or night, including coastal areas of Kankesanthurai to Hambantota via Puttalam, Colombo, and Galle.

It is expected that the rain would not exceed more than 100 mm but would be around 20 mm to 30 mm.

Winds will be south-westerly, ranging from 25 to 35 kilometres per hour, particularly affecting the coastal areas from Mullaitivu to Puttalam via Kankesanthurai and Mannar, as well as from Hambantota to Pottuvil. People have been advised to take precautions.

In the past week, 40,450 people belonging to 12,312 families have faced hardships due to the heavy rains, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) reported.

Heavy rains soaked the Sabaragamuwa, Northern, Eastern, Southern, Western, and North Western provinces.
