The Royal Asiatic Society of
Sri Lanka’s (RASSL) lecture this month is “Thirteenth Century as a turning point in the historical development of Sri Lanka?” It will be delivered by Prof. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri, Professor of History, University of Colombo, on Monday, August 26 at 5 p.m. at the Council Room, Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka, 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.

The abandoning of Polonnaruwa as a centre of political authority in the 13th century is a significant moment in the history of Sri Lanka. Though there is a strong perception of the continuity between the pre- and post-13th century historical developments. Prof. Dewasiri however argues that the forces of discontinuity are much more significant and explores several historical factors that are central to the proposed theory of ‘historical discontinuity in the thirteenth century’.

The lecture is open to all. Those interested could also join on Zoom:
