SLPA to reduce workforce

As part of a government initiative to reduce the head count within state institutions the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is currently on a drive towards outsourcing their staff.

Under the scheme of recruitment initiated by the government the port was instructed to reduce the present cadre from 8000 to 6000 over time, SLPA Chairman Keith Bernard told The Sunday Times Business.

With people being recruited at the port for political reasons over time the SLPA has been asked to reduce its permanent workforce to 6000 within the next two years.

However, with the East Container Terminal (ECT) coming into operation later this year an increased staff allocation would have to be made.

In this respect, they have been asked to ensure that they outsource the workforce as and when needed.
