We welcome Rishma Farhan, a leading, educated English teacher whose enchanted learning methods has improved the lives of students in Sri Lanka.
Rishma Farhan is an American Degree holder for English and Education with a distinction for Foundations of Education, Public Speaking, English composition, Literature and Creative Writing. She has completed TEFL in USA. She is also a Platinum medalist for Public Speaking and Gold medalist for TV News reading. She has also won many other awards for public speaking and English. Most of her education was in the USA as she was brought up there. Her experience in English teaching is eight and half years.
The inspiration behind her teaching career was her mother who is the principal of Royal International Elocution and Preschool (Colombo 9) since 1999 and her father and grandfather. In terms of the success behind her academy (Royal Academy of English Diploma, Reading and Speech which is accredited by The American Council of Training and Development, USA) her husband was her unwavering source of motivation, always encouraging her to excel in training qualified teachers and deliver the same mode of teaching as her with a special syllabus for each child.
Her academy is successfully running with qualified teachers with over 500 positive reviews and students attending classes even from far areas. She offers a variety of personalised English classes for both kids and ladies such as Reading Certificate courses and Grammar for kids, Diploma and International Advanced Diploma in English and Spoken English for ladies. There is also a long waiting list as the current demand for her classes are high. Rishma has launched her own workbook “The Phonics Booster” in 2021 which offers a step-by-step guide to learning phonics and consonant blends. She has produced over 200 copies and received a lot of positive feedback for it as it aids with fluent reading.
Communication with students is the best quality she offers to her students which means always available to clear their doubts outside of working hours and give guidance to parents on how to train the students to improve in necessary areas. Her teaching revolves around lifelong learning and dedication, hard work, open communication and encouragement. She encourages students’ communication in class and outside, speaking slowly and patiently translating each word and sentence to their native language, giving pep talks and empowering them to promote classroom interaction.
She has provided a safe learning space for all students with a ladies’ only environment, personalized syllabus for each child to cater their requirements. Before the enrollment of classes for kids, each student and parent are interviewed and a syllabus is created according to their requirements.
Attending conferences with educators, Advanced learning programmes, hosting seminars in leading schools are some opportunities she has received so far along the journey because of her updated and unique teaching pattern.
Her goal is to provide opportunities for her students to showcase their talent and she proudly shared that in the 2023 UK Reading Festival – out of 35 participants, 32 won gold medals, 3 won silver and 1 student won the All-Island prize. This year, over 65 students will be participating. She wishes to empower as many ladies and kids as possible to speak and read English fluently while growing their confidence in her journey of becoming Sri Lanka’s No 1 English Educator.
