Longest running film festival returns to Northern peninsula

Jaffna International Cinema Festival, Sri Lanka’s longest running international film festival will be held for the 10th consecutive year in Jaffna from September 03-09.
The festival will kick off with the opening film ‘Kodai Irul’ (Darkness of Summer) directed by Indian filmmaker Kutti Revathi at Regal Cinemas, Cargills Square, Jaffna at 6.00pm on September 3.
‘Kodai Irul’, depicts the rich ethnographic culture of India’s primitive tribe Irulas. It also brings to light their vulnerability and how easily they get trapped into the system of bonded labour and other social evils through a journey of a newly married couple.
At this 10th edition, there will be four competitions for National Short Films, International Short Films, Debut Films and New Asian Currents – Documentary.
Screenings will be held at Kailasapathy Auditorium, University of Jaffna, Regal Cinemas and American Corner in Jaffna.
Young filmmakers will meet at Kalam- a space for cultural encounters for short film screenings. Closing ceremony will be held at the newly opened Jaffna Cultural Centre on September 9.
This year, the festival will honour veteran Indian filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
