SLAF Heavy Transport squadron marks 67 years
View(s):To mark the 67th Anniversary of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), No 2. Heavy Transport Squadron which falls today, September 1, the media were invited aboard an Antonov 32 (AN-32B) aircraft.
The squadron, which operates under the command of Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa, specialises in providing humanitarian assistance and transporting Lankans affected by disasters, both within the country and overseas, with the aid of AN-32B aircraft being used for these missions.
Initially, the squadron was located at SLAF Base Katunayake and carried out transport and patrol duties.
With the expansion of the Bandaranaike International Airport, No. 2 Squadron was shifted to Ratmalana in 1985. In 1986, new aircraft were added to the squadron as it expanded to commercial flights and aerial survey missions apart from transporting troops, VIPs and cargo.
