Voter numbers vary across provinces, Western highest
View(s):With a close contest among candidates running for the presidential election, the focus is turning to electorates with high voter percentages across the provinces, districts, and electorates.
According to the electoral register due to be used, the Western Province, consisting of the Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara districts, accounts for 2,789,595 votes of the total of 17.1 million votes in the country.
The Gampaha District, with 1,881,129 votes, has the highest number of registered voters in a district, followed by the Colombo District with 1,765,351 votes while the Kalutara District has 1,024,244 votes. Therefore the Western Province with about 25 per cent of the country’s vote has been the main focus of candidates.
In the Colombo District, the Kaduwela electorate has the highest votes amounting to 203,706, followed by Kesbewa with 194,430 votes. The Kolonnawa and Maharagama electorates too have around 144,000 votes each. Colombo central electorate has 119,890 votes.
The Gampaha District’s voter count has shown an increase from the 1.7 million votes recorded in 2019 to the current 1.8 million votes.
The district with the lowest voters is the Vanni electoral district with 306,081 votes.
The highest number of voters from an electorate is the Nuwara Eliya – Maskeliya electorate which has 347,646 votes while the electorate with the lowest number of votes is Kayts in the Jaffna District with 25,533 votes.
