“Threads of Tradition” the exhibition by Kandygs that is on at the Lionel Wendt today (Sunday, September 1) celebrates the rich legacy of Kandygs handlooms and the timeless artistry of handloom weaving.

Founded by Felix and Sita Yahampath in their backyard with just 10 machines, the company name, Kandygs, was derived from the initials of their children and it remains a family business, with the second and third generations actively involved in its operations.

In a press release from the company, Kandygs explains that their fabrics are primarily woven by rural women artisans across Sri Lanka. “Kandygs has work-from-home and cottage weaving projects, empowering women weavers across the island.”

Among the highlights at the exhibition are intricate Dumbara weaves that infuse tradition with contemporary style, a regenerative collection of upcycled lifestyle products, designer bamboo sarees, and a full range of interior textile solutions, including cushions, rugs and table linens.

Leading design studio Perago, also unveiled an exclusive collection at the exhibition. Rezani Rishafy, Head Designer at Perago said, “Our newest collection is a celebration of Sri Lankan identity, infused with a modern sensibility. We’ve thoughtfully designed our pieces to suit smaller living spaces, ensuring that style doesn’t compromise functionality. The collaboration with Kandygs has been integral to this vision—their fabrics perfectly capture the essence of the Sri Lankan heritage we are proud to showcase in our designs.”

Threads of Tradition is on today at the Lionel Wendt Gallery from 9 a.m.- 7 p.m.
