Royal Institute shines at Western Province Schools Swimming with 14 gold medals

Royal Institute International School (RI) outsmarted the rest by securing 23 medals at the Western Province Inter-School PCC Swimming Championships 2024, held in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the PCC Swimming Arena and organised by the Past Pupils Association of Central College, Piliyandala.

RI’s swimmers captured a stunning total of 14 gold medals, seven silver medals, and two bronze medals, dominating the competition and underscoring the school’s commitment to excellence in sports. Competing against some of the best young talents in the region, RI’s swimmers stood out in multiple events across various age groups.

Their achievements not only highlight their individual dedication and rigorous training but also reflect the strong support and coaching provided by the school. The success of RI at this prestigious event is a testament to the school’s emphasis on nurturing well-rounded individuals who excel both academically and in extracurricular activities.

Among the top achievers for RI, Disali Lokuwithana, who claimed five gold medals competing in the Under-12 Girls category. She claimed the top positions in the 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke, 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly events, to bag five gold medals.

Lithuka Jayakody, who turned out for RI in the Under-10 Boys segment, secured three gold medals for his team winning the 50m , 100m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke events.

Rahoodi Chaninsha, competing in the Under-14 Girls segment, won two gold medals and a silver. She won golds in the 100m Butterfly and 50m Butterfly events, and was placed second in the 50m Freestyle.

Minurya Perera claimed two golds and a silver competing in the Under-16 Girls category. She was placed first in the 200m Individual Medley and 50m Backstroke events, and claimed a silver in the 100m Backstroke event. Nathasha de Alwis bagged two gold medals, competing in the Under-14 Girls category, claiming the top places in the 50m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle events.

Nishil Wijesinghe won a silver medal in the Under-14 Boys 100m Breaststroke event while Risara Ranmira Kottage added another silver to RI’s tally after placing second in the Under-12 Boys 50m Butterfly event.

Shabiha Shiraz, who competed in the Under-18 Girls category, claimed two silver and a bronze medal. She was placed second in the 50m Breaststroke and 100m Breaststroke events, and was placed third in the 200m Individual Medley event.

Sahansa de Zoysa claimed a silver and a bronze competing under the Under-14 Girls category. She was placed second in the 100m Breaststroke event and was placed third in the 50m Breaststroke event.
