Programmes with Indian and Lankan cultural elements further promote the historical relationship between the two countries, Prof Ankuran Dutta, Director, Cultural Centre, Indian High Commission said.

He was speaking at an event to mark India’s 78th National Day held at Guruge Nature Park in Ja Ela organised by businessman and philanthropist Dhanavardhana Guruge.

“There is a relationship between India and Sri Lanka since 2,500 years ago and we should continue to maintain that relationship,” Prof Dutta said.

“Sri Lanka is a beautiful land shaped on the basis of metta, karuna mudita and upeksha. The ongoing Dhamma school education bears witness to this.” The event featured Lankan cultural singing. Special guests hoisted the Sri Lanka and India national flags, planted an Indian national tree, placed a garland on the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, and lit the traditional oil lamp.

Dhammika Samarawickrama, I Dissanayake, Major General Boniface Perera, D S K Pathirana, and Bina Gandhi participated in the event.
