The Cabinet has approved a proposal to provide a grant for students to follow vocational training courses.

Under the proposal, some 50,000 students will be selected to receive the grant amounting to Rs 50,000.

Students will be able to select a course of their choice and use the Rs 50,000 to enroll for the course. If the course fee is higher, they would have to find the remaining funding.

The funding would be provided only for courses which have a job market.

The proposal was submitted by Education Minister Susil Premajayantha. He said that the Government was in the process of negotiating for US$ 100 million for the project.

“We believe that the scheme will be helpful for students to follow vocational training courses with the aim of finding job opportunities’, Minister Premajayatha explained.

Students will be able to register in the final stages of their school education.

The Government proposes to implement the programme from January 2025. The proposal will also be included in the upcoming budget proposal.

The minister said they were considering if the full payment should be made for under-privileged students.
