Horizon College International Malabe Celebrates Fifteen Years Of Future-Focused Learning
View(s):This year, Horizon College International Malabe marks fifteen years of growth, landmark achievements, and innovation in Sri Lanka’s educational landscape. Located in Malabe, with a branch school in Nugegoda, Horizon is now the alma mater for over 2,300 students. In today’s fast-paced world, staying ahead of the curve with effective educational techniques is no easy feat. At Horizon, however, innovation is their bread and butter.
“Our dynamic student-centred approach with technology, personalised learning, and soft skills development is aimed to gear students for the future,” says Principal Maryanne Hills, who has over 40 years of experience as an educator. “During the elementary years, we use activity-based learning methods. We prioritise holistic, project-based experiential learning.”
At Horizon, technology is deeply entwined with learning. Teachers at Horizon create an environment that allows students to collaborate and develop their creative problem-solving skills.
“Data analysis will play a crucial role for us in the future with developing curriculums and personalised learning plans,” says Maryanne Hills. One of her long-term goals is to develop a strong STEAM approach to education, prioritising not just science, technology, maths, and engineering, but also the arts.
Learning at Horizon goes even further. Chairman Upul Daranagama tells us how the school was built with purpose, giving students the space to learn without barriers.
“Fifteen years ago, we planted many trees within the premises. Coupled with the fact that all our buildings are solar powered, today we have a lush and environmentally-friendly atmosphere,” says Mr. Daranagama.
“We are also the first school in the country to have a cohesive shuttle network for easy access,” adds Mr. Daranagama. “We are focused on maintaining quality, infrastructure, and discipline.”
Mr. Daranagama, too, highlights the emphasis on technology. “From grade eight upwards, our classrooms are digitally equipped with smartboards. We plan to integrate these at all levels.”
Mrs. Hills adds, “The concept of education is shifting from a one-time experience to a lifelong journey. We encourage this by nurturing a growth mindset.”
Horizon College International Malabe is flush with facilities, from libraries to labs (science, biochemistry, physics, and more), along with facilitating many sports, clubs, and societies. Horizon provides daycare facilities as well.
With a 100% pass rate for their Edexcel syllabus, Horizon strives to provide merit-based scholarships to their students. With tertiary education, Horizon Campus offers University Grant Commission (UGC) recognised 32 degree courses under six faculties.
“My grateful thanks goes to the teachers and their exceptionally hard work over fifteen years to bring the school to where it is today,” says Mrs Hills.
As they celebrate fifteen years of educational excellence, Horizon College International Malabe is poised for immense growth. “We want to collaborate with key schools in the South Asia region, enhance technology, and give our students access to more activities, from martial arts to robotics,” concludes Mr. Daranagama. “I believe we have stayed true to our mission over the years and will continue to prepare students successfully for the future.”
