The Election Commission (EC) has announced details on the specific types of valid document to prove a voter’s identity at the polling booth.

Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said that the National Identity Card (NIC) issued by the Department for Registration of Persons, a valid passport, valid driving license, senior citizens identity card, government pensioners’ identity card, identity card issued to clergy; are eligible to be used to cast votes.

Valid driving license or valid passport: Can be used to prove one's identity

Temporary identity cards are issued by the EC through the Grama Niladhari.

Less abled people, who are registered voters, will also be able to use the temporary ID card issued by the EC.

Those who do not have an identity card or have lost it, can get one through their Grama Niladhari for use in the presidential election.

Students who have reached 18 years of age but have not yet got their ID card may present the required document. Identification issued by the Department for Registration of Persons is also valid, he said. Mr. Rathnayake said: “It is strongly advised [that] people who don’t obtain a valid document, to contact the local Grama Niladhari as soon as possible to prepare their identity card.’’

Electors who do not have an identity card, or those who have one bearing a photograph that’s not recognisable, should obtain a special identity card.

They can contact the Grama Niladhari or superintendent of an estate (if the voter is a resident of a plantation) and present two copies of black and white or colour photographs of 2 1/2 cm x 3cm. Applications are available from Grama Niladhari or superintendents. Completed applications must be handed over to the Grama Niladhari or the superintendent before September 14.

Temporary ID cards will be issued by the district election office and once the vote has been cast, these must be handed over to the officials at polling centres.

The following forms of identification are not accepted: unclear identity cards, cards issued by departments or institutions, receipts provided upon obtaining an identity card, and documents containing any photographs certifying the identity.
