He was a role model to all

Kirinelis Samararatne

Today, September 8, is the first death anniversary of Kirinelis Samararatne Mudalali. Like many successful businessmen, Samararatne Mudalali hailed from down south in Hakmana and came to Colombo to pursue a career as a businessman.

Having travelled to Colombo with a ‘saw’ and just a few rupees to work in a building site, it had not taken much time for him to grasp the work and fulfil his intentions of becoming a building contractor. He registered his company ‘Samararatne Builders” and in no time it had grown to unprecedented heights. He was fortunate to win bids for small buildings and later was awarded many contracts to build bigger buildings like the People’s Bank and Air Force buildings in Colombo and
the outstations.

In time he built his own house at Gangadara Mawatha, Mount Lavinia. He never forgot the Buddhist temple in his native Hakmana and spent generously on its maintenance and improvements. Samararatne Mudalali also developed the Attidiya temple known as “Kele Pansala’ and even built a hall for a Montessori school. He also helped the famous Mallikarama temple Ratmalana on many occasions.

He owned a huge complex in Attidiya that housed his office, Samararatne Hardware stores. He built houses for his five children, Saman, Asoka, Suranga, Chintha and Indika. His sons Asoka and Suranga were guided to start their own construction companies while Saman was assisted to start a hardware business in Attidiya.  His youngest son Indika went to RMIT university in Melbourne and now lives in Brisbane. He had helped immensely to build the dwellings of his workers too.

Samararatne Mudalali was a role model to all. He took part in many Buddhist activities in temples particularly in the latter years
after retirement.

I have known him for over five decades as a neighbour but came to know him closely when his youngest son Indika married my daughter in 2000. Of late he had been under treatment for the usual age-related illnesses. He was well looked after throughout by his only daughter Chintha and son-in-law Chaminda.

May his journey through
samsara be short and swift until
he attains the supreme  bliss
of Nirvana.

A celebration of his life

Anthony A. Page

Anthony (Baba) Page who was born on March 21, 1948 and passed away on August 31, 2024, was the eldest son Albert and Lucy Page. His siblings are Therese, Louis, Cecila, Jean, Joseph, Ranjit and Marianne. The Catholic service of thanksgiving held at the St Joseph’s College chapel on September 3, was a celebration of Anthony’s life.

Not only was it beautiful, it was deeply moving and deeply spiritual.

It made me reflect on the life and the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ  — ‘prayer is the absolute bridge to the Absolute’. Special mention must be made of Anthony’s wife Pat. She was deeply devoted to him throughout their married life.

It was very kind of Louis Page to mention the generosity of my aunt Lady Letitia Gardiner (wife of Sir Chittampalam Gardiner) in his moving eulogy.

My condolences to the entire Page family.

She lived and loved
This lady…so rare…
So noble.
A jewel among jewels
No…A precious pearl…
a mother to all.
May we meet again in Samsara…
Till then be at peace.
As we keep you in
