Hesali Peiris, a name that is rapidly gaining recognition in the world of motorcycle racing, has become a symbol of determination and rising talent. As a dedicated school athlete, Hesali was no stranger to competition, consistently excelling in various activities. However, her transition to the racetrack was a bold move, especially considering her limited experience—only three hill climb outings and no mass start races under her belt.

Understanding the immense potential she held, Shane Gunawardena, the President of the Motorcycle Racing Federation, took the initiative to connect Hesali with Sirilak Yiengkulchao, Thailand’s leading female rider. This invaluable training opportunity, coupled with local guidance from Shane’s son Jaden, a seasoned Sri Lankan racer, equipped Hesali with the skills and confidence she needed to step onto the international stage.

On September 1, Hesali made her mark at the Asia Cup of Circuit Racing for Women, held at the Thai Racing Complex. Despite being the youngest competitor in the lineup, Hesali’s presence was anything but timid. She took on seasoned riders from some of the strongest racing nations, including Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, China, and India, with remarkable courage and skill.

As the race unfolded, Hesali, a student of Daybridge International School, Dehiwela, found herself in a fierce contest with the Philippine rider, with the two pushing each other to the limits in a thrilling display of speed and strategy. Her ability to keep riders from Iran, Singapore, and Nepal behind from the outset, showcased her racing acumen and composure under pressure.

Hesali’s debut international performance not only surpassed the expectations of federation officials and race organisers but also highlighted the raw talent that Sri Lanka continues to produce, even in the face of limited resources. Shane Gunawardena, reflecting on her success, has already arranged for further overseas training to ensure Hesali’s continued development. He is also actively seeking sponsorships to support her journey, emphasising that despite Sri Lanka’s lack of dedicated track facilities, the nation’s riders have always made their mark on the international stage.

Hesali Peiris’s story is one of exceptional promise, where youthful determination meets opportunity. Her journey is just beginning, but she has already proven that she has what it takes to become a leading figure in the world of motorcycle racing.
