S. Thomas’ College Gurutalawa: Pioneering Modern Education Through Digital Transformation The Hayman Memorial Digital Initiative

View(s):

Digital technology is reshaping education, enhancing traditional learning environments, and preparing students for the demands of the 21st-century world. Technology integration makes learning more interactive and engaging, equipping students with essential skills for the digital age. As educational institutions worldwide embrace these changes, schools must adapt and remain relevant. S. Thomas’ College Gurutalawa (STCG), a historic institution with a rich legacy, stands at a critical point where adopting digital technology is essential for ushering in a new era of learning. The Hayman Memorial Digital Initiative (HMDI) marks a significant step in this transformation, modernising STCG to ensure its continued relevance in an increasingly digital world. The STCG community, including the Board of Governors, the Headmaster and teachers, current and past students, and parents, will proudly celebrate the HMDI implementation from October 2nd to 4th, 2024.

A Legacy of Tradition and Perpetual Improvement in Education

Founded by Dr William Rollo Lenden Hayman, STCG has a storied history of providing quality education in the British outward-bound boarding style. Under Dr. Hayman’s leadership, the school flourished, establishing vital infrastructure such as science laboratories, libraries, and halls, and setting high educational standards. Nestled in the scenic hills of Gurutalawa, STCG became a beacon of Thomian tradition and academic excellence. However, recent socio-economic and technological shifts presented new challenges, prompting a need for modernisation.

Revival Efforts and Renewed Hope

In recent years, renewed efforts led by dedicated alumni and supporters have been instrumental in revitalising STCG. In December 2023, a group of alumni united to assess STCG’s educational status and support its growth through investments in modern technology and infrastructure improvements. Key figures in these efforts included Mr Kapila Gunawardane, a 1956 graduate and a former Managing Director at Union Carbide Corporation Sri Lanka, who proposed building a state-of-the-art indoor sports stadium, and Dr Neil Horadagoda, a Veterinary Pathologist and academic from the University of Sydney, who advocated for modernising the school’s ageing science laboratories. Their initiatives marked the beginning of a larger movement to integrate STCG into the digital era.

The Hayman Memorial Digital Initiative (HMDI)

The HMDI was established to drive STCG’s digital transformation. Named in honour of Dr. R.L. Hayman, the initiative focuses on modernising classrooms with digital teaching facilities, upgrading the IT laboratory to a digital library, and integrating advanced digital tools throughout the school. The project was developed through collaboration between the school’s management, alumni, and the Board of Governors. Key objectives included renovating senior school classrooms, enhancing the IT laboratory, and establishing digital learning facilities. The initiative also emphasises sustainable funding and effective governance to maintain the digitised education model.

The HMDI’s implementation began with classroom renovations led by a project management team. Enhancements included new doors, windows, ceilings, modern electrical systems, and protective wooden wall guards to ensure the longevity of the renovated spaces.

Alumnus and IT expert Anil Gammampila, through his company Itechro Pvt Ltd, played a crucial role in providing a sustainable, cost-effective digital solution. A local server network connected by fibre optic cables supports smartboards and computers, delivering a seamless learning experience at a fraction of the commercial costs.

A major achievement of HMDI is the establishment of an IT library designed to foster interactive learning. Equipped with modern furniture, easy-maintenance raised access flooring, and specialized areas for hands-on learning, the library supports the school’s transition into the digital age. The upgraded IT Library now features the latest hardware and individual Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS) to ensure consistent power for digital teaching tools.

A Vision for the Future

HMDI’s vision for STCG extends beyond implementing digital tools; it aims to create a transformative learning environment that equips students with the skills needed for future challenges. The initiative enhances learning through interactive platforms, personalises education with adaptive technologies, and equips students with essential digital skills.

Central to this vision is the Learning Management System (LMS), which provides a comprehensive platform for managing course content, tracking student progress, and facilitating communication between teachers and students. The LMS, alongside other digital tools, empowers teachers to deliver tailored and engaging lessons, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Continuous professional development and training programmes for teachers will ensure that they remain adept at using digital technologies to enhance the teaching and learning process.

A New Era of Education at S. Thomas’ College Gurutalawa

The Hayman Memorial Digital Initiative represents a pivotal moment in STCG’s history, positioning the school at the forefront of modern education. By modernizing infrastructure, implementing sustainable digital solutions, and fostering a culture of innovation, HMDI is guiding STCG into a new era of education. The initiative not only honours Dr. Hayman’s legacy but also ensures that STCG remains a vibrant and dynamic institution, ready to meet the needs of future generations. HMDI’s success highlights the power of community, dedication, and a shared vision for progress, setting a benchmark for other schools striving to adapt to an ever-evolving educational landscape. HMDI assures the highest standards of education supported through modern digitalised technology.
