The Excise Department will conduct special raids utilising its full strength during the election week.

Deputy Excise Commissioner Channa Weerakkodi said the department had deployed teams to take action against those who had liquor exceeding the approved limit without permits. He said the raids were part of measures to limit pre-election violence.

According to him, more officials will be deployed for the special raids during the election week. He said that they had instructed retail liquor shops, wine stores, and bars to remain closed during the September 21 election day and the day after.

He warned that licensed sellers who violated the department’s directive would have their licences suspended or cancelled in addition to legal action.
