Cinnamon Gardens Police investigating a clash between a group claiming to be a nationalist organisation and alleged supporters of the National People’s Power (NPP) at the National Library premises have summoned both groups today (15) for further inquiries.

The clash occurred on Thursday during a public conference organised by the Deshapremi Jathika Peramuna (DJP), a nationalist organisation. Police said four members alleged to be NPP members had disrupted the meeting and behaved in an aggressive manner, leading to a clash between them and those at the venue. The four alleged NPP members suffered injuries, with one being hospitalised. The individual who was hospitalised has given a statement to Police. Both sides have also lodged complaints against the other with the Cinnamon Gardens Police.

A Police source said they have already analysed CCTV footage from the incident.

The clash at the National Library premises

Attorney-at-Law Nuwan Bellanthudawa, one of the DJP’s Central Committee Members, told the Sunday Times the conference had been organised to educate the public on the “real challenges before the country” amid the “fake show” being put on by the main candidates at the presidential election. The conference was open to anyone.

Mr Bellanthudawa claimed that all the main candidates were supportive of efforts to divide the country, destroy Buddhism and were ready to betray war heroes. Mr Bellanthudawa said he was speaking during the meeting and had been speaking of the NPP and its main party the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna’s (JVP) role in carrying forward the “Yahapalana Agenda” of the 2015-2019 government through what he called “Yahapalana Mission 2,” should it come to power, when he was interrupted by several men, who behaved aggressively, leading to a clash. He claimed that some of those in attendance had identified one of those involved as an NPP organiser in Borella.
