The Postal Department has asked the public to visit their area post offices to obtain their poll cards as delivering to houses has ended.

Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara said that they were able to distribute 14.5 million (85 percent) of poll cards by Friday morning, and had a remainder of 2.5 million poll cards (16 percent) to be distributed by Saturday.

He added that even though distribution of poll cards ended last evening, people can still visit post offices during work hours and collect their poll cards from September 18 to 21.

“People who did not receive poll cards can get the poll card from the area post office by confirming their identity by showing their national identity card, valid passport or valid driving license. People can obtain poll cards even on election day,” he said.

He added that voters can cast votes without poll cards after confirming their identity at the polling centre. However, he added, poll cards expedite the process of identifying voters.

Explaining the house-to-house poll card distribution process, he said the biggest challenge they faced was house owners not present at their houses.

He added there were also some incidents where some officers were assaulted and poll cards were snatched from them when they were distributing cards. However, Police had immediately taken action.

“The poll cards remaining at post offices are mostly the poll cards which could not be handed over as the residents were not available,” he said

Mr Sathkumara added that after obtaining special permission from the Election Commissioner they have on a temporary basis recruited retired postmen to be deployed for election related activities, as they were short staffed.
