With its outlet at the Staples Street bend — constantly busy and buzzing with customers from morn till night–‘Paan Paan’ last week expanded this popular space to encompass an upstairs floor that provides for more cosy and convivial gatherings.

The new space for the artisan bakery, bright and airy with a striking selection of art on the walls can seat around 40 and Paan Paan owner Aboo Yusuf hopes it will be utilized for business meetings and little get-togethers, not only by the corporate community but groups of friends and others looking to meet in a welcoming setting.

Italian architect Dr. Carlo Andrenelli, the brains behind the design who was at the opening told the Sunday Times how he had effected the transformation of what was earlier a restrictive low ceilinged space with small windows into one that is welcoming and comfortable. The wooden staircase has very easily accessible steps and once upstairs, the eyes light on the food counter, of course, while lingering over the selection of art on the walls. These are definitely worth lingering over – prints of the work of Dominic Sansoni, Anoma Wijewardene, young artist Pushpitha to name a few.

The idea was to give patrons, a chance to enjoy some art while trying out the goodies, says Aboo.

Architect Andrenelli whose Dolomi Studio has been based for long years in Sri Lanka from which they venture to countries like the Maldives, Mauritius, the Seychelles and Dubai, has vast experience working on signature brands like the Ministry of Crab. His distinctive wooden door at the Paan Paan entrance makes it instantly recognizable and upstairs too, subtle touches like the curving ceiling with its recessed lighting (a UFO look) and the calming green with potted palms all make for a relaxed setting to enjoy the bakery’s many treats, both savoury and sweet.

Paan Paan is open from 6.30 a.m. to 9.30 p.m.
